Denim. Why we all wear it — and why it deserves to be rethought.

1) A universal essential
Denim is often the first real piece in our wardrobe.
A pair of jeans we wear, age, and keep for years.
It crosses seasons.
It crosses trends.
It becomes essential.
But behind this iconic fabric lies a more complex reality.
2 )The environmental impact of conventional denim
The textile industry is among the most polluting industries globally.
According to international studies (UNEP, Ellen MacArthur Foundation), it accounts for around 10% of global carbon emissions.
Conventional denim production requires:
-
Up to 7,000–10,000 liters of water per pair
-
Heavy chemical treatments for washing
-
Offshore mass production
-
Virgin polyester derived from petroleum
And yet… we keep wearing it.
Because we love denim.
4) Why I chose to make it anyway
To me, it was essential to offer denim.
If we want to build a more conscious wardrobe,
we need to rethink our essentials — not only seasonal pieces.
A good pair of jeans is worn often.
It deserves to be made well.
5) Our approach
Our denim is made in Canada.
Albert composition:
79% organic cotton
19% Repreve® recycled polyester
2% Lycra
Organic cotton reduces harmful pesticide use.
Repreve® is made from recycled plastic bottles.
Lycra provides natural movement and comfort.
The washing process is done locally, under Canadian environmental standards.
Not perfect.
But more intentional.
6)The denim you keep
The most sustainable garment
is the one you actually wear.
Good denim should:
-
Fit well
-
Move with you
-
Last over time
-
Adapt to seasons
Less quantity.
More quality.
More proximity.
7. What’s next
Albert denim opens for pre-order Tuesday.
Limited local production.
Because choosing an essential
deserves intention.
